The ABC, Screen Australia and VicScreen are pleased to announce the captivating three-part event mini-drama series Goolagong will premiere on Sunday 4 January at 8.20pm on ABC TV, with all episodes available to stream on ABC iview.

Goolagong is based on the inspiring true-life story of world champion tennis player Evonne Goolagong, one of Australia’s most revered sporting heroes. From her Wimbledon debut in 1970, to becoming the first mother to win Wimbledon in the modern era in 1980, Evonne’s story is one of family, love, loss, and an unwavering spirit. In the time of burgeoning black rights and women’s lib, Evonne proved to herself, her people, and the world that she was a true champion.

Goolagong stars rising new talent and proud Whadjuk and Ballardong Noongar woman Lila McGuire (The Twelve) alongside renowned fellow lead actors Marton Csokas(Asylum, The Equalizer), Felix Mallard (Ginny and Georgia,Turtles All The Way Down) and Luke Carroll (Mystery Road Origin and Scrublands).

Goolagong is made by Werner Film Productions, part of BBC Studios, directed by Wayne Blair (Mystery Road Origin, Total Control) and written by Steven McGregor (Mystery Road: Origin, Sweet Country) and Megan Simpson Huberman (Dating The Enemy, On The Job) with script producer Ruth Underwood (The Tattooist of AuschwitzThe Cry).  Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Roger Cawley are Associate Producers.

Goolagong is a uniquely Australian tale of the resilience, triumph and legacy of a young Wiradjuri woman but also a moving story of family and romantic love, one which promises to resonate with Australian and global audiences alike.
